mayhaps the first time i have felt nervous reading a book. the hotel scene was so tense. shame i spoiled the ending for myself prior to reading
It's impossible to read this without being cognisant of Lovecraft's views – the whole thing is so coloured by his revulsion and incuriosity. The horror mostly relies on you agreeing with him that these people who look different and smell strange must be unspeakably repellent. It's not hard to see how he's really talking about miscegenation.
