this book put me in a reading slump. it's my least favorite one by darcy coates so far. it took so long for anything to happen, i felt like it would never end. i'm glad it's finally over.

yeah i think picking 'dead of winter' as my first darcy coates book to read was a mistake because now i keep comparing all her other books to that and none of them are quite as good like they're not bad thrillers, but also nothing special and i am just so disappointed for no reason.
anyway, if you're down for a middle of the road thriller that really doesn't have anything wrong with it and the premise of lost hikers in the woods sounds interesting to you, you can give this a go!
a tad too long for me and the switching between different pov's really undercut the tension-building. the twist was twisting and also made a lot of sense but was hard to spot.
not very scary for a horror book either.

Interesting read where the twist is hard to spot - worth it in the end!

I love thrillers that deal with woodsy/camping stuff. It was a great story up until the very end.
The ending kinda fell short for me. It was a bit predictable once it hit a certain part of the book. That’s the only reason I didn’t rate it higher.

Omgooorsh what a ride! Such a departure from the other D.C. I have read. This unfolds like a found footage documentary, and you get multiple character perspectives. This not only leaves you with bated breath at the end of most chapters come mid-book, but it makes for a truly fun (and at times super gross) read. I have been dipping my toes in the horror genre, and I found this very beginner friendly.
While I would have liked more character depth, there was enough to keep you either seething or rooting for someone. She wrote Todd all too well…I’ve known this man, and it just gave me the shivers each time we were on his chapters!
While definitely not cozy horror, it’s a casual fun horror, and I would definitely recommend it!

I wasn’t sure about this book for the first 10 chapters but after that I could not put the book down. Love it.

I found it entertaining but a little bit difficult to stay focused on some of the middle that felt kind of redundant. Overall though it was good.
