“I no longer knew what standard to live by. Until now, my body had belonged to the convenience store, even when I wasn’t working. Sleeping, keeping in good physical shape, and eating nutritiously were all part of my job. I had to stay healthy for work.”

"You eliminate the parts of your life that others find strange—maybe that's what everyone means when they say they want to 'cure' me."

This is an unusual yet compelling book.

3.5 stars- can't decide if I should give this book 3 stars or 4 stars. though there was a sense of sure-ness(?) in the ending (with her setting herself free from the demands of Shiraha/society) the novel still felt incomplete, it was as if she went back to the way she was in the beginning. there was no remarkable change that occurred within her. it felt like the book was just a brief moment of doubt before returning to her original system of beliefs.

This book was intriguing but also vaguely unsettling! I loved getting to read from the perspective of a character who just does not understand people because it gave a glimpse of what society looks like from an outsider perspective. Not my favourite read but still pretty dang good!
