I read this book as part of a commitment to read through the Hainish Cycle. I believe this is Le Guin's earliest published work in the series and it kind of shows in the style. It reads like a fable, craft-wise. The clarity that I so love in City of Illusions is more like an abruptness of communication here. The words don't carry the story as much as it drops it at our feet in big blocks. But I still enjoyed myself. I loved Yahan as a character and how the book dealt with burgeoning and inexpert wielding of mindspeech. There could've been a little more space left to explore the emotional side of the characters.

It was okay. The characters were mostly one dimensional and the plot pretty straightforward. Some aspects of the worldbuilding were quite interesting, though
