While this was quite good, I felt that compared to Ursula Le Guin's other works, the main character was a bit of an empty suit; the story was all about honor and glory and lacked much psychological depth. Despite that I did really enjoy this book, I just didn't love it the way I did some of Le Guin's other works.
It’s in a similar vein to the other Hainish novels I’ve read so far, but you can tell it was the first one she wrote - the same anthropological lens, but not as fully-formed. I was tempted to still give it five stars, because the ending was wonderful.

3.5 stars really. Le Guin's first novel has a rather pulpy plot but her superior prose puts it above many of its peers. The prologue makes an excellent stand alone story, and while the rest of the novel doesn't quite measure up, it still is a fun read. People who only know Le Guin through The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness may be disappointed with this, but fans of SF in general should enjoy.
Maybe I was not in the right mood.
Also, I kind of expected much more of this book.
Having read the left hand of darkness, and enjoying it so much, I expected a different journey here. A different world. But, in the end, it felt like a good story, but more of the same. I'll try getting through the trilogy and check if it goes up from here.
