This starts very slowly and then becomes hard to put down. It fills in the back story on the Hainish cycle of space sociologists. Like the others in the series, it helps you consider fine points of your own culture by considering worlds in which they are absent from the local culture.

I really enjoyed this, I'm definitely biased, she is my favorite author. Another of her impeccable journey stories. Great twist near the end. Heartbreaking ending. I know it's a Hainish book, but felt the most fantasy and least sci-fi of what I've read (this is the third.)

I think I've mentioned it before, but I love reading the canon of influential spec fic because I get to see where themes and archetypes meandered on their way to becoming a trope. Also I love Le Guin; I've read a ton of Le Guin. How have I not read the Hainish Cycle as a series? Anyways, I'm fixing that mistake now since I have the first 3 bundled into one volume.
And my favorite Le Guin trope?

Flying felines.

Catwings, Rocannon's World, and Catwings Returns, and I'm sure elsewhere that I just can't name right now. The fact that the fate of the world is based on fickle flying cats agreeing to do what people ask of them tickles me.

Toss in light speed travel and time dilation along with faster than light drones, interplanetary conquest, and a rag-tag crew complete with a lordly braggart with a heart of gold on a quest to save the planet, or a necklace, or their hides... the goal shifts a few times... by traveling into a blank section of their map and... figuring it out when they get there.
