It's hard to describe but this book made me feel like a kid. I think it's Ursula's mythic tone. This book reads like simple, old high fantasy - similar to David Eddings - except that it is science fiction and she is a way better writer than Eddings.

Any ways this book is magical. It has flying cats, elves and dwarves (by different names), and sword fights, but also space ships and time dilation.

What conceptually could just be a very pulpy basic sci-if book really elevated by a sense of care, and beautiful writing
adventurous dark

lowkey very confusing bc so much happens, so many creatures show up, and they all have random names/categorizations, but the real human emotion in it comes through (sometimes). you can def see it in the final words of the story, as well as when Rocannon starts connecting with men, as they become his friends. but also took me soooo long to read, it wasn't dense lengthwise -- but it was a slog

I don't know what to say except that Le Guin's writing just hits me in the feels. I loved this! And while I see some of the flaws with the pacing and unsatisfactory way in which themes and worldbuilding were explored, I enjoyed every moment of this read. I probably enjoyed this more than Wizard of Earthsea even though I think WoE is a stronger book. Rocannon was just the best. He was such a cool character, level-headed and solid but loyal and loving. Excited to keep on with the Hanish Cycle.
