A collection of short stories, great for dipping in and out when you have a fair bit of time to kill. Most of the crimes are not only well thought out, but also very ingenious; the only obvious crime is the final 'Adventure of the Copper Beeches'. The criticism of Holmes appearing overly omniscient stands at times, but isn't as detrimental to the stories as some make out.

As I make my way through the Holmes canon, the atmosphere Conan Doyle creates using the characters, their brotherly relationship and their surroundings keeps these books amongst my favourites.

4/5
Yep, Sherlock works a LOT better in short stories.

I loved this book! Some very interesting cases in this book. Loved the style of writing and the storytelling was superb. I may have to read more . . .

This is the first short story collection in the Sherlock Holmes series, following “A Study in Scarlet” and “The Sign of Four”. Some stories I thought genuinely intriguing such as “Scandal in Bohemia” (Irene Adler, love of my life I think), “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” or “The Adventure of the Copper Breeches”. Others (such as “The Red Headed League” or “The Man with the Twisted Lip”) I found downright ridiculous.

With most cases I could “deduce” (ha ha) the solution quite early on but I still enjoyed following Holmes way of investigating and the continuous banter between him and Watson.

The fact that they are short stories was great because you did not have to focus on a hugely complicated plot and could just read one story in a luck break or so. :)

Very fun and easy to read but all of Sherlock’s deductions felt like a reach.
