I love the story, but I really struggled with the writing style.
adventurous

This holds up so well for a fantasy book. It’s very world heavy but you have to appreciate it for what it is. I can see why there is so much hype around this story, but it just didn’t hit me in enough ways for it to be rated higher.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy stands as the defining pillar of modern fantasy literature. Spanning The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, this epic is a masterwork of worldbuilding, mythmaking, and deeply human storytelling cloaked in otherworldly grandeur.

Virtually all modern fantasy owes a debt to The Lord of the Rings. It popularized the idea of races like elves, dwarves, and orcs in fantasy and set the standard for epic quests, magic systems, and fictional maps.

From the humble evolution of Frodo and Sam to the regal return of Aragorn, Tolkien’s characters each embody moral choices, courage, and personal growth. Samwise Gamgee in particular stands as one of literature’s most quietly powerful heroes.

Tolkien’s prose can be dense, and his descriptive passages—particularly of landscapes, songs, and history—may test the patience of modern readers seeking brisk pacing. Female characters are few and generally occupy symbolic roles rather than central ones. The story’s moral clarity, while resonant, may feel overly binary for those who prefer gritty or morally gray narratives. The pacing can also fluctuate, especially in The Two Towers, where some segments slow considerably.

The Lord of the Rings is more than a trilogy—it is a foundation for the fantasy genre. Its influence is impossible to overstate, and its emotional, philosophical, and narrative depth continues to inspire generations of readers and writers alike.
