What can I say. Will always be the first great novel that I read. And even before I read it I knew it. I was given the story as a hand me down from my father. He collected me and my brothers and told us the magical tales of Tolkien. Showed us the maps, played us the songs and gave us the legends.
When I read it for the first time I was 13 and if was before the movies came. I wanted to read it before.
No other fantasy author can compare to Tolkien. No one has his linguistic talent. Many tries to add songs and poems but no one has his poetic talent. And no one can create a world as he did because he did it first.
He will always be one of my biggest idols and literary icons.

I began The Lord of the Rings on Christmas 2018, in the morning, and I finished just now, around noon on December 31st, the day after my 50th birthday. Decades ago, it was practically my Bible, but I hadn't read the whole thing through in many years. I should to re-read it more often. The saddest, greatest, most involving, most thrilling, most beautiful world ever created in the English language, or so says I. I needed to revisit it, and I'm glad I did.
