Did not read the whole poem, but substantial parts of it, including one of the essays.

I came across this via AS Byatt and because I had read a collection of him earlier. I stumbled upon this edition on my last day in Dublin and re read it. It hurt me in the best way possible. Sad, but amazingly lovely.

This was the book that got me into poetry. Absolutely stunning, heartbreaking and very accessible. A beautiful description of faith in the face of adversity and holding onto your beliefs despite scientific advances (even though I’m not religious thought this was a really beautiful theme!).

I'm actually gonna have to DNF this one...I'm super bored and I don't think I can read another 50 stanzas of this. Maybe I'll try again another time, but honestly this is the second time I've tried to read this and I always forget what I read about right away :/

Although rather vast, I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed this poem. I read it as part of my Victorian Literature module at University with a specific focus of how the poem presents religious doubt in the wake of new scientific theories of the 19th century such as evolution. The language is beautiful and I think Tennyson captures the progression of personal grief incredibly well. Each canto could be read at it's own independent elegy - a testament to Tennyson's ability to use language and poetic form.
