I read “Target Practice” really quickly at work to see if some of our book club kids would want to read it. I’m pretty sure that they would like it because of the bright colors and action!

IN SPACE!

Cleopatra in Space puts THAT Cleopatra . . . in space. Suspend disbelief -- for instance, don't ask how a 15-year-old cheerfully adapts so quickly to the future -- and this is an adorable graphic novel filled with fun futuristic hijinks.

I don't think the heroine necessarily needed to be Cleopatra, because aside from the name (which is shortened to Cleo most of the time anyway), there's not much that's authentically "Cleopatra" about her, but it's a fun idea. There are talking cats and pharaohs and flying sphinx-carpets so it all ties together, even if it's not exactly history class material.

The story as a whole doesn't make a lot of sense if you take it apart, but it's definitely cute, and Rabbit enjoyed it enough that she has her eye on Book Two. I could have done without all the academics-bashing, and I thought that Cleo's BFF was basically a Willow clone, which is funny since Cleo gives off a Chosen One vibe, but again, CUTE and it features an ass-kicking young heroine, so I can see why Rabbit liked it.

Exhibit #1 to support the case that a strange concept, if well-executed, will work! Cleo is an absolute delight. Maihack brings such a strong sense of humor to the story, using sound, movement, and pacing within the paneled format to tell a funny adventure tale. I can't wait for the kids in our school library to fall as hard for it as I have.

Fast-paced with a likeable, intelligent, sometimes impulsive heroine. And a talking cat. Who doesn't like a talking cat? This series will be a hit. History, scifi, and lovely graphics all rolled into one.

A fun read for younger kiddos, although my antiquity loving ass was hoping for more of a crossover between Cleopatra's era and the story. I think this would be amazing if it got the HBO watchmen treatment and became a TV show.
