Brought it along as my vacation read during the Easter holidays, but I found it very wordy, requiring significant concentration, which wasn't a "vacation-friendly" book. Eventually, I switched to the audiobook, and that made a significant difference in keeping up with the plot and started to enjoy it.

In my mind, “the book had been written with winter nights in mind. Without a doubt, it was a book for when the birds had flown south, the wood was stacked by the fireplace, and the fields were white with snow; that is, for when one had no desire to venture out and one’s friends had no desire to venture in.” (Quote within the book)

It is a slow read throughout, but one that wraps itself around your heart and settles comfortably in your soul. A life unfolds as the world outside continues to turn.

Excellently written! Towles delivered this one with grace, wit, and such thoughtfulness to the nuances and daily pleasures of life despite one's circumstances.. "if a man does not master his circumstances then he is bound to be mastered by them."

Highly recommend this heartwarming novel for anyone who wants to fall in love with the characters, root for their success, and learn about early 1900's Russian history along the way.
