4.5 stars - LOVED this book. I liked the characters, the worldbuilding/politics and the unique magic system.

A stellar read by one of my favorite Authors. I love how she shows how complicated getting what you want can be.
Minor: Bullying, Death, Violence, Murder, Injury/Injury detail, Classism
I had no idea this was a sequel series to the Spoken Mage books. Luckily you don't really need to read those in order to understand what's going on here. I'm sure knowing exactly what happened previously helps a little, but this book was easy enough to understand on its own. Besides, anything crucial was explained anyway.
That's probably the biggest problem with this book: it explains too much, and repeats itself a lot. This is first-person narration so it does make sense for the character to go over what just happened in her head, but reading about something happening and then having it repeated through the character's thoughts can get pretty annoying.
The plot is pretty boring, if I'm being honest. You'd think that having someone constantly try to scare/hurt/later kill the main character would make for an interesting read. You would be very wrong. Most of the book is her going through classes and slowly discovering her power, and sometimes having a great moment where she can show off her political prowess. I can almost understand why she didn't want it spread that there was graffiti on her walls, but why wouldn't she report the holes in the arena? She isn't the only one who uses that space! And she definitely should've told more than two people that she almost died. Maybe something could've been done about it sooner before an assassin broke into her room.
Which I guess leads me to the next problem with this book. She has these super powerful spells that bar anyone who doesn't have permission from entering her room. Except that she's put right next to Darius who can come and go as he pleases because their rooms are connected. And no one thought to tell her this or ask if it was okay first. That is some serious privacy invasion and consent issues. I still don't get how the assassin got in without disturbing Darius, since his room is the only one one can go through in order to reach her. Feels like the super-lock failed just for the sake of plot convenience.
It wasn't a bad book, I guess, just kind of dull. The break-up between her and Darius seemed pretty forced. I get she doesn't trust his brother but then why try to accuse him within Darius's hearing moments after hearing all his protests and reasons? And the bullshit of "oh I wasn't hired by the king I was hired by the man" is just semantics. That made me want to smack the assassin.
I already checked out the whole series so we'll see how Incredibly Powerful Girl gets even more OP as things progress.

Probably the worst case of Mary Sue I've ever come across. It's been a while since I read it, I might have even gotten all the way into the 3rd book but just couldn't get myself to finish it.
A mage with the unique power tousurp other people's powers. Sounds good. Lots of potential for a character that has to learn to master her talent and study EVERY other type of magic there is so she can use it. She'd have to be both intelligent and have the drive to study. Sort of like a Hermione Granger.
What do we get instead? A character who can not only use her powers pretty much intuitively. No.... by accessing someone else's power she also suddenly knows exactly how to use them. As if she'd studied for years in that discipline like the person she's tapping.... really?

I want the next book! This book blew me away!
I’ve been desperate to read this book since I finished the Spoken Mage series shortly before we canceled Kindle Unlimited over the summer, so when I found out this book was on sale, I raced to find my kindle and get it.(literally. Almost fell on my face running in socks.)
And it paid off so well!
I loved watching the story and worldbuilding laid out, but my favorite part was the characters. The two princes are a little confusing and drive me crazy, but Verene and Byrony were awesome!
This was a great adventure back in the same world that has changed so much, and now I just have to get my hands on the next book!

This was a book I just downloaded late at night out of curiosity, but it did not hold my interest very well. While I attempted to continue reading it, I felt very similarly to those who felt like the story lacked emotion.
