I read this book recently for book club. The narrative captures the evolution of his relationships well. Mostly, it made me so sad because the narrator starts living his life in such a detached manner over time after having been a much more engaged person. He is gripped by some aspects of law and can throw himself in to that work, but can't seem to really connect with people. I guess it helped me understand how living and interacting from a distance can happen, but it was so earnest and dark. Also, the highlight of the act of reading and being read to is a lovely element, but simultaneously sad I found.
I saw the movie and I thought that it was well done, but I got something completely different out of reading the book.

I loved this book so much. The plot and characters were great, the idea was amazing and it was written very well. The difficulty definitely increased in Part 2 compared to Part 1, but I enjoyed it all the way through. When I reached Part 2 I made it to Chapter 6 then restarted Part 2 and read it out loud to myself and it made more sense. I definitely wasn’t expecting many parts, especially the ending. I’m rating it 5 stars not even for the overall plot of the story, but the way it was written and just the basic concept of it. I would have never guessed that it’s somewhat historical fiction. The way we follow Micheal’s whole life…I just adore it.
Micheal Berg reminded me very much of Mersault from The Stranger by Albert Camu. Both characters kind of sat and watched their life in front of them rather than experiencing it themselves.
I could definitely write a paper on this book. Whether I’m discussing themes like guilt or maturing, I could most likely convince someone to read this book.
I wouldn’t have guessed “Hanna’s secret” from a mile away, but all the evidence Micheal explained makes it so obvious.
All the people who rated it only one star were probably to antsy to appreciate the book and read it thoroughly. They were antsy to get back to their cheeky summer romance novels. :)
I finished the book around 20 minutes ago, um..why am I a little shaky?
