I have wanted to read The Reader for a long time, ever since Kate Winslet earned an Oscar for best actress and I heard about the story for the first time. I finally watched the film a couple of years ago and I have been looking for the book at thrift stores ever since. About a year ago I found another book by Bernhard Schlink, The Weekend, and I just couldn't get into it - quite frankly, I just couldn't understand it. I never understood first hand the importance of the translator. Carol Brown Janeway did a phenomenal job. I was lucky enough to happen upon The Reader a few weeks ago at my local Goodwill and it really was so engrossing. I wish I had read it before knowing the twist, but even then it was wonderful. A fantastic book about a hard to understand time period in Germany.

Beautiful, sad story.
Made me cry

I enjoyed this book, it isn't an easy subject are but it is a compelling read and a story where I was eager to know what happens next. I think the subject was dealt with in a good way that didn't make the book difficult to read.
The book poses lots of questions, in the first section the story makes the person reading the book ask moral questions, whilst later in the book the author poses moral questions for the reader of a completely different nature regarding the war etc. The book is haunting because the questions posed stay with you. The book does not provide the answers or suggest how you should be reacting to the story but leaves conclusions to you. In this way I think the book is very skilfully written. It has left me with lots of half formed ideas/thoughts in my head which will probably in time complete themselves.
What I also like about this book is it opens up a completely different side to the war. I have read several war-time fiction books but this one comes at a new angle. I like the fact that it questions how people dealt with what happened during the holocaust and how we continue to deal with this; the whole question that a country was over taken by madness, or that people involved were monsters. As the book states it is easy to hide behind these thoughts and so preserve our vision of humanity, rather than considering that the people involved were humans like you and I and trying to fathom why it really happened.
I'd highly recomend this book.
