Very interesting to read the original of a fairy tale so well known to everyone, it is strange that in this version you reach the point at which most modern adaptations end the tale - when the Beast returns to his princely form - and realise you're still only halfway through. What remains is basically backstory with lots of concerns regarding rank or status, details of Fairy lore and how everything came neatly together. I quite like the whole backstory but feel like it could have been worked into the narrative better than just having the good Fairy telling the story for about 30 pages, it got a bit bogged down and dry. I was expecting the original C18th to be a bit darker than the Disney version we all know, as is the case with other things I've read, but actually I think this was less dark and though I think Madame Villeneuve constructed a great original fairy tale, I've now got a fresh respect for the modern adaptations and the extra elements they added.

This book would be more of a 3.5 than just a 3. Yes, whilst the Disney animated classic is better this is still a solid story. I think there were interactive elements in the story helped me want to finish the book instead of putting it down. I believe if you are a person who is just someone who doesn't care if there is a lot of action in a book then this is a good choice.

Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite Disney movies. Reading this original version of the fairytale was for the most part magical experience. You get an in depth perspective from all angles from this story. You see Beauty and all the courage she has for her family and love. You have the Beast with all his mysteries. In the end you see how all there circumstances where tied together with magic. There were some parts I did not enjoy, but I feel it is due to the time when this was written. Overall, definitely worth the read!
