Wasn't expecting a ghost story, but still a fun, easy read. Kept me entertained for a day.
Oh Jennifer McMahon! With your creepy little girls and your scary men and your is it or isn't it a ghost mystery and your dark woodsy locations! I love you so! I can't even have a favorite amongst your books because they are each more intricate and lovingly detailed than the last! (except Tikki Girl, but everyone has to do something bad for contrast)
I loved this book, Winter People will always be one of my favorite books, and I’ve read a few others that weren’t quite as good, but this was for me... a mystery thriller with a ghost? Yes please!! It was creepy... but also had you trying to solve two murder cases... great story!
Meh. This had promise at first, and I did read it all the way through to find out who committed the crimes, but the supernatural aspect was a little much for me. I really hoped there was going to be some other explanation for the mother's actions aside from her being essentially possessed by the Potato Girl. Had i known how hokey ghost-story this would turn out to be, I doubt I'd have picked it up. I found the characters very one-dimensional, though I will credit McMahon with what reads as pretty accurate behavior in children (bullying, pack mentality, etc).
She definitely has a theme! So so similar to The Winter People but different enough to still enjoy just as much! If you've got something that works I guess don't change it :-) I was still in suspense the whole time!
I’m giving 5 stars because for the type of book it is, it’s really really good! I wanted something to read on vacation, so not anything particularly deep or would require much reflection. I enjoyed the characters, especially Del. The plot was brisk and had appropriate twists, good dialogue. In general, just a really good murder mystery with just the right amount of supernatural elements.
This assured, ambitious debut novel offers an unusual mix of mystery novel and ghost story, with particularly well-drawn coming-of-age themes. Kate fears she betrayed Del, a free-spirited farm girl. Did her betrayal cause Del's death? Who killed Del? Another local girl is murdered in a similar manner at the time of Kate's return. Could the killer be loose again? Meanwhile, Jean appears to be possessed with Del's spirit and may have the answers to these questions. Seriously spooked, Kate reconnects with her childhood sweetheart, who is utterly convinced that Del's ghost is afoot in the woods and intent on seeking revenge. McMahon deftly juggles a complex narrative, which smoothly interweaves the past and the present, while also credibly introducing supernatural elements by presenting them through Kate's skeptical viewpoint. But McMahon's real coup is her touching characterization of the brave and desperate Del. As Kate investigates, she learns stunning truths about many events and people from her youth. McMahon does a particularly good job of portraying the cruelty of school children.
More paranormal than I prefer. I almost DNF. Very slow. Decent end but I wouldnât recommend this one.
I did not like this one. The internal monologue of the main character is boring and interminable. There’s very little suspense, it’s just waiting for something to happen.
Creeped me out and kept me turning pages until way past my bed time. Now, if I can go to sleep, I'll count my lucky star.
