3.5 AVERAGE

Quick, easy read. Nothing special but perfect for the beach (or the like).

A ghost story and a mystery, romance and a character novel...all rolled into one. Liked it, didn't love it. Figured out things about half way through, but had to read it to the end, just to make sure. Since it was read in a waiting room, I was thankful I was swept up in it, so for that, I was grateful for Jennifer McMahon's ability to keep it interesting enough to follow it to the end.

This book was a fast read. I read it in one sitting, during the super bowl. It wasn't the best story, and for a murder mystery, there was not much suspense at all. If you are looking for a "Fluff" book that will entertain you for a few hours, this would be a good pick.

This book is a page turner. The story of Kate returning to her hometown and essentially returning to the secrets of the past is compelling. It will have you guessing. The ending was weird and seemed a bit forced. All in all, it was a pretty good book.

The description calls this book utterly unforgettable. I disagree and think it is utterly forgettable. Now, I'm not a big fan of thrillers so my opinion is probably not worth a lot here. I read the description and thought this was going to be somewhat of a spooky ghost story, but I was wrong. I didn't find it captivating and felt like there were some plots that didn't connect well for me. I thought the childhood flashbacks were promising, but overall it fell through for me.

This book was wild! I wasnt sure if Kate was going crazy or if there was something supernatural going on. I really enjoyed this.

Meh. This story didn't quite hit the right note for a thriller, a ghost story, or a psychological drama for me. It started out with a thriller beginning, and then failed to follow up on it. Then there was a large chunk that was about growing up poor with an undesirable best friend, and also about moving home to care for your Alzheimer's-suffering mother. I didn't think it really hit home with either of those--I could never figure out why the main character was drawn to Del or Nick or any of the unpleasantly-described characters she falls for. Then there are elements of the supernatural, but it's unclear whether I'm supposed to believe them or not. Then there's the thriller/murder mystery, which is at least treated consistently throughout the book, but is wrapped up suddenly with a villain monologuing in an unlikely way when caught in the act of trying to murder another little girl.

So, meh.

What a good book!! Creepy and incredibly addicting. As this author's first book I am very impressed. I read The Winter People and immediately got addicted to her books. This one wasn't nearly as bad though on the creepiness scale. I read it at night just fine, but definitely still a little creepy, as is her style. Definitely recommend!

This is probably more like 3.5 stars. It's pretty good. Suspenseful enough to keep me interested, but not quite *great*. I keep reading books about Vermont by sheer coincidence.
