The story goes back and forth between the time before Del's murder, and the days after the second girl is killed. This was a bit confusing at first, since some of the detials, they went back and forth, but once you got used to that bit, I really enjoyed Jennifer's story telling.

Kate was great, she had to look after her mom, and deal with the fact that her husband was a cheater, and then this murder of a childhood friend that she pretended wasn't, lied about constantly, in fact.

I love how all the clues came together, and there was that influence of the paranormal, though you wouldn't expect it too much from the rest of the book-but there is a rational explanation of that.

All in all, I love it, didn't see the bad guy coming, though I could've if I'd linked the mother to what was happening to her to some other key facts :)

So if you like a murder mystery, check this book out!

I’ve read two of Jennifer McMahon’s books now and I have them both five stars. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read all her other work.

I didn’t hate it but I also didn’t love it and after about 50% I was only continuing to her the ending explained.

First of all, the audio narration was horrible. Combine that with a story that's just okay and you have a story that is really predictable and kind of boring. There were plot points that didn't go anywhere and felt like they were just thrown in.

2-1/2 stars.

I love her books!! She always finds a way to keep the reader intriqued and wanting to know what happens next. It is very hard for me to put her books down once I start them. I like how there are always unexpected twists and turns that a reader does not see coming.

Apparently I'm going through a phase here. All of the books that I pick up lately seem to have something to do with people being murdered, and then figuring out whodunit. And perhaps, I'm going through all of these to try and find the ones that are the LEAST like that while still being in that format. That have the most of some other literary component to them. Which I guess makes me a snob, but so be it. I genuinely liked this book. The "potato girl" who is one of the central characters in the book was really well written. She has this vibe to her, where it makes you start thinking back to your own childhood and remembering that ONE friend that you had, that your parents kind of looked down on, and didn't want you to play with because they were a little bit weird, or wild, and you would always go over to their house because you knew, no matter what, at least you wouldn't be bored. This book will have you looking around while you're reading it to make sure there's no one else in the room with you.

I've read several of Jennifer McMahon's books over the years and always enjoy them. They have a perfect blend of drama, mystery, and suspense, although they may not be for everyone. Often there are details of child abuse, rape, and other violence.

PROMISE NOT TO TELL was McMahon's first book, and now I know why her popularity only grew. It was dark, twisted, but had me engaged from the first chapter. I'm a sucker for a good murder mystery and this was so much more.

Also, this was one of my very last books of 2020 (93rd read of the year!)
