There's a lot a lot going on in this book and with the multiple points of view and geographic locations and military strategies it took a really long time to keep track since I didn't remember anything from the earlier book. I thought the presentation and analysis of the subversive possibilities and the challenges of gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation were presented compellingly in different formulations even within a fundamentally masculine military world. And I was not a fan of the way sex was always simultaneously transactional and violent even when theoretically there were real emotions involved. Softness wasn't given any space.

Beatiful. Stunning. This will be a Duology that I read and re read for years to come. I have not felt such sincere emotion due to a book in a long time.
