Brutal , sometimes difficult to read , after the deep emotional investment of the first book. I would say masterful! Nothing left behind, and each character brought to their full use. Vivid scenes in my mind.

I enjoyed the over all story, but there were certain chapters that really bothered me.
I would have rated the book higher if it weren’t for the weird connotations Baoxiang seemed to have with rape and sex as a whole. I found it very off putting and not necessary to the plot in this extreme

Wow. This is a hefty duology that covers *so much* ground. So much centers on desire - how strongly should we cling to desire? What is worth giving up? When is the price too much? What's left when desire is achieved? What if the reward is too little? This work had strong philosophical engagement with a plot that was moving and epic. This is a strong contribution to the work of dark, historical fantasy.

 Zhu and Ouyang have a wonderful dynamic.
The ghost sword and deadly wall of ghosts were super cool. I wish there were more ghosts.
It's really fun to watch Zhu outsmart everyone with insane plans. It probably would've been five stars if there were more ghosts.

3.5* definitely a bit over the top and a bit too much filler in comparison to the first but still an enjoyable read
