This sequel wasn't what I was expecting. I'm upset because I loved all these characters so much and wanted more for certain ones. I would be surprised if I didn't think of these characters continuously for awhile.

holy fuck. the way that this book examines suffering and ambition and the ultimate question of whether or not suffering is worth the goal - i just!!! ahh!!! and gender in this????? know that Zhu and Ma will continue to live in my brain. what a phenomenal follow up to an incredible first book.

a genuinely perfect duology!! (addition from jun 17) i had to come back to this review to be able to accurately gush about how amazing this book is. never before have i been so moved by the exploration of gender in a fantasy setting and i love how much this book allows you to see of all its characters. every character feels so alive and dimensional inside of the narrative, which allows you to be constantly gutted and surprised at every turn. i can not wait to continue reading parker-chan's work
