Very exciting ending to the duology. A truly epic historical “fantasy”. It felt like a fantasy read while not really having any magic to speak of. The Mandate of Heaven had no power (not really) other than showing that a person is significant. Despite that, it still read like a historically inspired story.
I’m glad I listened to the audiobook because I found that helped me keep track of the characters unfamiliar names better. BUT, I think that many people would disagree and say reading the names would be easier.
This book was pretty brutal and I felt for the characters as they suffered and triumphed. The world was very immersive and, as it turns out, based events.

I didn’t enjoy the first… 90%. It was sooo rooted in “I have to do this because it’s my faaaate” and “I will sacrifice everyone else to get what I want.”
And I was exhausted by reading the shallow, singular motivation over and over again.

This book was a rollercoaster but it finished SO STRONG that i have to give it 5 stars. completely satisfied. The characters are so dynamic i loved and hated them all. The battles really stood out to me in this book as dynamic sets. the drama was so well executed that i felt like I was watching a movie the last 100 pages.

Satisfying conclusion, Zhu deals with many situations that ultimately affects her world view. I did enjoy the first one more, and I am looking forward to more form this author.
