4.3 AVERAGE

Part 3 was like watching the 2-hour series finale of a prestige epic fantasy television series. Not just a culmination of character arcs and plotlines, but also the story's themes and ideas. It pits the four remaining major players together in such a juxtaposition that is heart-breaking. And just before the end it concludes the story of a fifth character who I thought was completely out of the game but instead was given a closure that left me agape in shock, surprise, and sorrow.

no hard feelings. just really couldn’t connect with the characters and struggled to keep up with the story. probably should’ve left it after book one.

A rather long sequel to the story started in ‘She Who Became the Sun’. I loved this continuation that explored other characters’ identities more in depth. It was satisfying to have a conclusion to the journey of Zhu.

The hopeful, stubborn beauty of the first book is replaced here with a gut-wrenching, existential-crisis filled slog of conflict, out-maneuvers, and deeper games. What felt powerful and fierce about the first book was overshadowed with heartache and complex explorations of characters’ inner workings. As someone who loved the ferocity of Zhu and Ouyang in the first book, I was sad about this at first, while also recognizing that this is truer to reality than protagonists who remain unruined by their decisions.

It was a book that honored Parker-Chan’s strength as a writer and story teller. A wonderful, impressive duology. The first book is one of my favorite books ever.
