This book makes me feel INSANE. WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE CHOSE TO SPARE HIM BECAUSE THE WORLD SHE WANTED TO CREATE WAS ONE WHERE THEY COULD BOTH BE THEMSELVES. 10/10 no notes.

I loved getting more of Baoxing & Ouyang’s perspectives. This duology has some of the best characters I’ve ever encountered, and lifelong favourites. However, it DRAGS, and drags, and drags. The author has a tendency to over explain everything that is happening emotionally to these characters, and frequently hits the same beats over and over. I noticed it in the first book a bit, but in this one it becomes really overt. Perhaps this is an issue of editing. The book could have been a lot tighter and less of a slough if this was pared down majorly.
Graphic: Body horror, Death, Gore, Misogyny, Self harm, Transphobia, Violence, War, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Xenophobia, Murder

I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first… really hard to get though at times
However, the characters have great depth. Each going through incredibly complex problems of identity, duty and destiny. These types of themes make the book very dark and violent which I did enjoy… I would check trigger warnings before reading though as it can get very intense.
I’m glad I read this as it’s a lot different to my usual reads but I probably wouldn’t read it again.

Fun and adventurous and emotionally heartwrenching at the same time. Really enjoyed how Parker-Chan drew complex, morally layered characters without glorifying any of their deeds but also without preventing you from feeling sympathy with them. Also enjoyed the explorations of gender that felt a natural part of the story rather than forced into it or just stuck onto the surface.
