FINALLY, A STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER DONE RIGHT!
Channari, though brash and brazen, has a reason for that. She’s mistrustful because she’s traumatized. She’s snappy because she grew up having no one to defend her but herself. She’s strong because she has to be. But she’s not heartless. She loves her sister, the snakes, and children; she enjoys cooking, telling stories, and singing. She is a person outside of her trauma. So many authors get this so wrong. They give their characters so much of said trauma that they forget to give them a personality— E. Lim skillfully avoided this mistake, and I commend her for that. Honestly, I was so relieving to read a book where I actually liked the female lead.
Elizabeth Lim surprised me with this book— I didn’t think I’d end up liking it more than the Six Crimson Cranes duology, but here I am!

This book was absolutely phenomenal. I literally have nothing bad to say about it — other than the fact that now I want to reread Six Crimson Cranes instead of reading more from my physical TBR.

I liked this book, and the characters, but I wanted more.
