Good writing, but not enough plot to hang onto for my personal reading preference

hey what

Absolutely fantastic writing, with a brilliant framing, narrative voice and eerily realistic setting. The sudden genre shift and meta textual awareness at the end felt a bit sudden, on the nose, and underdeveloped, but Armfield's writing sings and it was a pleasure to be immersed in this watery climate disaster.

Beautiful writing. That’s about it.

Honestly this book has just finished me off, that ending literally made me sob

Private Rites was an excellent book telling the story of three completely opposite sisters in a post climate disaster world. The book touched on many different themes and I particularly liked the post late stage capitalism realism. The working while the world is falling apart at your minimum wage job? Very sadly realistic.

It was easy to read in the background and I found myself finishing it very quickly. I liked the deep exploration of emotions as well as the queer themes and found family.

The ending felt a little 180 but it was good still

I mean. Would have been great if it wasn’t just the exact plot of Hereditary but on water..?

I read Our Wives Under The Sea last year and couldn’t wait to read Private Rites when it was announced. It did not disappoint. Julia Armfield truly has a way with words and while I was dissatisfied with the plot, I stayed for the writing style.

Very uncanny depiction of a climate dystopia. The ending will not please some people but I welcomed the change of pace.
