Sprachlich großartig kann ich mit der Geschichte leider nicht all zu viel anfangen. Wie auch schon bei "die Vermessung der Welt" werde ich mit den historischen Figuren nicht richtig warm.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t expecting it to be so funny, but it had a wry, dark humour throughout. I was confused by the jumping in time but you just get used to it. The story plays with perception - people telling different versions of the same event, people behaving differently when in company or on show. I wish I knew more about the German folklore of Tyll, as I didn’t know if he doubled for death or if I was reading too much into it. I feel I’m being stingy with my score, but I just don’t feel I enjoyed it enough for a 4/5.

CW on this book that it contains a lot of child abuse, like even for the 17th century a lot of child abuse.
This book was fine, but I didn't really get the fuss. The characters weren't much developed, but it did make me want to learn more about Bohemia and the Winter Queen, I'd rather read a book about her.
But the writing wasn't bad and stars for choosing an interesting time period

Interesting recounting of the thirty year war mixed with the old German tale of Till Eulenspiegel.
