DNF after 4 hours. This simply wasn't my style of book or pace. It was fine, and the narrator was fine, but I just kept waiting for the story to hook me and it didn't.

PREFACE: This is a review of the audible edition of the book.

What do you do when you are an Army specialist named Joe Bishop and your planet has been taken over by hamsters and lizards from outer space, thus propelling you into an inter-stellar adventure you could never have trained for? Why, you go out into space using the training you never received and set out on a course to save humanity on paradise. At least, that's what I would do and I am glad to see I am not the only one who thought so!

Craig Alanson really has a gem in this story and has me very anxious for the upcoming audiobook sequel and subsequent audiobook production of book 3! I simply cannot overstate how much I enjoyed listening to this book. Right from the start, the characters became highly addictive and the storyline showcased the challenges facing humanity as they fought off the Ruhar with the help of their "allies" the Kristang.

Paradise is a planet which humanity must now visit in order to help our allies fight off the race which has taken over our planet. Right from the beginning, the action and characters are engaging and captivating.

And then you are introduced to the biggest jerk in the known universe, Skippy the Magnificent. Skippy, a highly intelligent AI who is using his new monkey/bacteria to help him on his quest, while claiming to help humanity on theirs, shows up and brings about some extremely humorous situations. With a mind that cannot slow down to our measley processing speeds, Skippy definitely brings a great deal of fun to the story.

And last but not least, R.C. Bray. R.C. is how I found out about this book and, yet again, he has not disappointed with an outstanding narration.

Do yourself a favor, buy this book and give it a listen. You won't want to stop listening! Also, Skippy might hack your phone and change your ringtone to the audiobook version. So, yeah, avoid that and just listen on your own :)

This is one of those shallow, entertaining on-the-rails rollercoaster books I love. The whole point is escapism and laughs. Sorry, but there isn't any real character development, giant allegories, or any of that silly "literature" stuff here.

What we do have is one poor combat grunt that keeps ending up in the worst possible place at the worst possible times. Each time he ends up there good ol' Lady Luck comes around and beats him with a baseball bat filled with love and barbwire. Plucky plans against different enemy alien shenanigans and a fateful meeting with a uproarious lonely male (weird right?) AI ensues. The AI even admits that he's a jerk.

So if you want a hilarious adventure romp on easy mode, pick this book up, I mean it is like Old Man's War or Willful Child. If not, go pick up I dunno, 2001 or something.

Tedious american war and military glorifying space war which has no depth of character nor feelings, just one thing happening after another. Wanted to like it but just couldnt finish this one so gave up after half way.
Edit: A friend insisted I finish and true enought, it got better for the second half because of Skippy character. But still not much depth.

I know there is a market out there for this book but it most decidedly is not me. I saw someone leave a review a few days ago that described a book as “dude bro sci-fi” and that is EXACTLY what this book is. Not my cup of tea.
