In general, I think this is a fine first book for a new series. The world is interesting, the characters intriguing and there's a good set up.

This is the issue I have...the prequel novella for this series was really quite good. A nicely contained story that made me actually want it to be a bit longer so I could learn more. (Yes, I understand it is the point of it in the first place.) So with the novella proving the sisters can definitely tell a tight story, this book once again felt a bit bloated. It wasn't as long as some of their others but definitely felt too long for a first book.

I'll read the next one whenever it comes out but my (perhaps futile) wish is that they'd start telling stories more like the prequel.

It is getting to a point where they REALLY need an editor. I think this book had so much potential, but ultimately is bogged down by their insistence on having long books just for the satisfaction of having long books. Overall the writing is just not good and it is so dragged out that it isn’t compulsively readable like the first few books in ZA. I am really disappointed by this one!
