I liked the book, but I was constantly annoyed by Maggie. Cue the: Gasp. Convulse. Faint. Sheesh.

The author has an amazing command of the English language: her prose often reads like poetry. Don't look for any happy endings. The ending felt abrupt after such a long story, but it is worth reading, at least once.

I loved the first part of the book, not so much the last part. I did lose momentum reading due to no fault of the book, but I don't know that it would have made a difference. The first part of the book was charming and you felt like you were reading Romeo and Juliet with the hope of a happier ending. But, that is not at all what went on at the end of the book.

Not a book that has aged well. Wonderful writing and descriptions of English rural life in the 19th c.  Frustrating characters from my lens and a ridiculous ending.
