Boring beginning, then an okay story with some interesting commentary on societal norms of the time, and then a completely wtf ending.
Would have given up on it if it hadn't been a buddy read. I don't regret having read it to the end, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pick up another Eliot.

Re-read. I still enjoyed this, but having read Hardy’s Tess again recently and given it 4 stars, this didn’t quite hit the same.
Maggie Tulliver, a smart and emotional girl who wants to live freely, but is always judged by society and even by her own family. Her brother Tom is strict and doesn't understand her, which makes her feel lonely and misunderstood.
Maggie tries to do the right thing, but people always expect her to be perfect. When she follows her heart, she is blamed and rejected. The story shows how hard life was for women who wanted to make their own choices.
The ending is very sad—Maggie and Tom die together in a flood. It feels like only death could bring them peace. The novel shows the pain of growing up, family duty, and how society can be unfair, especially to women.

4.5/5 stars. Every scene of this book was so clear in my mind. It was as if I was watching a movie. Everything about it was beautiful—from the vivid and realistic relationships to the way that even the sentences were written. I related to Maggie and her struggles almost as much as I related to Jo March, to whom she is so similar. This book is heartbreaking and its characters lend it an almost tangible sense of verisimilitude; I highly recommend that everyone read it, especially those who loved Little Women as much as I did.
