2020 Caldecott Honor

The illustrations were unique and really supported the text. I liked the style, especially the contrast between the almost realistic people and the swirly surroundings. The text got lost a bit; it is my preference to have text easy to find on a page, not a part of illustrations that are borderline overwhelming. But that is a personal preference, I realize. The text was stunning in that it told a whole story in so very few words. The summary on Goodreads, I'm sure, uses at least twice as many words as there actually are in the book.

Told through few words and exuberant illustrations.

This book is really colorful. I didn't get the story and to be honest, I didn't like it that much. Could have been better with a little more text. Next time better.

Busy illustrations that reflect the sparse text so that they tell the story without words. But, so busy that they are nearly dizzying.

My favorite element of this book is the sound. The sound of the rain. The sound of transportation. The sound of a bass. It is great way to teach children the symphony of sound and how there are words used to describe the sounds.

This book won a Caldecott Honor--indeed, the illustrations help tell the tale. They have to as there are not many words contained in the pages. I found the artwork vibrant and engaging. I wonder what children think.....

Caldecott Honor picture book. Relatively simple concept but a good one. But the art overpowers the book - it is garish and overwhelming and hides the story. The text is spare and minimal and with different art would have worked.
