I LOVED Setterfield's first book The Thirteenth Tale, but for whatever reason, it took me a long time to start this one. When I did finally start it, it was slow for me at first. But eventually, the story sucked me in and I was mesmerized. Setterfield is a superb writer and I love the way she weaves a bazillion threads together building unexpected connections, masterful mysteries, memorable characters, and plots that feel more like Daphne Du Maurier or Wilkie Collins than contemporary fiction. In the end, I really enjoyed the book.

Quite captivating for the most part. Enjoyed the concept of storytelling. A little tiring to follow at times but some clever twists and turns in the tale.

Very beautifully written and I was invested in most of the plotlines. The ending was a little weak (especially with the huge mystery with the girl). There's also one character who has a very similar stance on something that I do and she basically suddenly changes her mind because of love instead of working with someone on it. It just bothered me because I feel like her opinion on the matter was reasonable and should've been considered more. Other than that I loved so many of the characters and trying to unravel the mystery of why everyone thinks the girl is theirs. Rita and Armstrong were definitely my favorites but a lot of the characters were enjoyable.

This is a slower paced novel and that killed me at times. However, I have to say don't stop reading. Keep going. It's so good. The characters are interesting and complex. There is a thin line of realism and magical, and you don't know what is true. It's beautiful.
