I picked this up in the library because I loved Writers and Lovers by the same author. This was a very different book, telling the story of three anthropologists in the 1930s studying tribes that lived along the Sepik river in New Guinea.
I enjoyed King’s writing style here as well, and yet the story was sort of weird in that the setting and time period seemed almost incidental. The best parts were Bankson reflecting on his childhood and family in England; the actual parts about the tribes were somehow a small part of the story — which fitted with the author’s message which was that studies by anthropologists tell more about the anthropologist than they do the subject of the study. Not sure I would recommend.

A surprisingly fascinating read for a free library pick up. Intriguing thoughts on anthropology throughout; I kept thinking about how this should be required reading for an intro anthro course vs some inhuman textbook.
