A beautifully written book about anxiety, depression, suicide, the monotony of our modern world but also a heartfelt reflection on the small moments that make life worth living. Do not let the sci-fi sounding synopsis put you off - this books is very much about humans and learning to appreciate life.

this book was not everything i ever wanted but it was still pretty good overall
imo things kinda feel off once they got to nyx - the actually plot felt predictable at that point. i do think that the depiction of depression/mental health issues felt very real. maybe the whole point is that nyx is boring in the way that it isn't the perfect fit that was promised nor is it some evil experiment?

I felt like the first half of the book was great and really pulled me along, I wanted to find out what happened even though we are given a window into the main events and there's no big surprises. However, the second half of the book seemed to just play out in terms of what I predicted would happen to the character in those circumstances, and offered nothing new on the first half.
There were some additional plot points introduced but not much was done with them. I presume they were supposed to be symbolic but the general apathy of the main character reduced their meaning and made it difficult to discern what they symbolised. I did enjoy the book in so much as I found it interesting, it was an interesting concept and kept my attention long enough to read to the end of the book and see it play out. However, it felt like the second half of the book could have had much more impact if something even vaguely meaningful happened.
Also I really didn't like the main character - I empathised with her and I felt for her, but I just found her very dis-likeable.

A devastatingly emotional take on the heartbreak/loneliness that would likely accompany a one-way trip to another planet.

FYI The book literally left me in tears….probably best to read it only when yr in an emotionally stable state, as it’s got lots of themes of depression, suicide, alienation, isolation, etc.

One of the most poignant and thought provoking things I’ve ever read.

I will be thinking about this for a long, long time.

The writing was poetic, the plot was minimal but perfectly paced, and the character development was so very interesting.

There are some really harrowing and sad moments to this story, but also some relatable and humorous moments too.

I am in awe of the author and how she has packed so much into such a short book. The side characters were as well developed as the main characters despite the small amount of ‘air time’ they got. In particular I loved learning more about Abby and Eddie.

TW for suicide, grief and death.

I had no idea I would love this book SO much!

The timeline flits between her life on Earth leading up to her leaving, and her in the present on planet Nyx.

It was surprisingly heart breaking. It made me feel claustrophobic. It makes you realise how beautiful the little things in life can be. It made me fall in love with life a little bit more. This is definitely a book I would re-read when I’m feeling down and need a reminder that there are good things here on Earth.

I really hope for the main character’s sake, that the whole thing was a Truman show like experiment…but I guess we will never know.
