I definitely prefer the books in this series that are set in portal worlds, but ones like this are nice to establish new characters and move the plot along. It's still great, but just not amazing in comparison to others in the series.

If there's any book in the series I might've skipped, it's this one, because I've never cared for Cora. But I've been interested in the Whitethorn institude since the beginning. And on one hand, I'm glad to finally learn something about it. On the other hand, I didn't like the direction the author took with the other school. There were still interesting things done with the said direction, but as a whole, I wish the other school had been something different.
