sigh. what a repetitive, plodding mess of a book

how did they manage to make reincarnation with a side of mutual murder deeply uninteresting after the first 3 times it was explained. this book is very much in the running for squandered premise of the year, neck and neck with Blob

the numerous flashbacks felt like a low-budget music video. oh look, we’re in Paris with baguettes! Now we’re in China with concubines!!! Next, the desert with camels~ When the author mentioned Pompeii as an aside I actually snorted out loud. It felt like fucking Disney Channel Pass the Plate except someone got stabbed at every cheesy location. most of the flashbacks could’ve been a recap in the present; many of them in the middle felt like fluff to try and add dimension— they didn’t reveal anything new about Arden or the reasoning

the drawn-out“reveal” was like a soggy firework- i expected something really interesting and just got a bit of smoke and even more disappointment. very handwavy hellscape with demon deals- it felt like a scrapped teen wolf episode. the “solution” even more so

i felt absolutely nothing for any of the characters because we didn’t really know them- every 5 pages they were kind then cold then loving then hateful then smart then dumb then sad then laughing. It was hard to root for Evelyn or Arden because they were such cardboard people with “many lives” as an excuse for not being fleshed out. the villain was just… a random creature… this story feels unfinished or rushed or something… like where is the rest of the char dev or magic system building

I enjoyed this story but I don’t think I’ll go back to reread it. First of all this book was much slower than I expected. I loved reading everything in the first half but by the time I got to the second half I was only really invested in the current storyline. The past settings were hard for my brain to wrap around as I kept having to look up time and area specific terms and the supporting characters didn’t feel as fleshed out. However!!! Evelyn and Arden’s love story is one for ages and I thought that in addition to writing of the story, the poetry was fitting and beautiful. I also loved the ending!

Damn, I was supposed to be asleep 6 hours ago but instead it's 4:30 am and I had to stay up to finish reading this. So, you know, one of those books. Would give 10 out of 5 stars if I could. I want to clutch this book to my heart. It's probably one of those that will stick with me forever. Also, lovely LGBT+ rep in its reincarnation plot, as they're always reincarnated in different bodies with no pattern to gender, and have a brief discussion about whether they feel like a girl or a boy that was really well done. Highly recommend this book if you're a hopeless romantic like me who loves ages-spanning, fated love stories with a queer twist.

Content warnings: death & murder, references to domestic abuse, medical trauma, some period-typical homophobia.

Our Infinite Fates by Laura Steven is a beautifully told story that might be good for those who loved the Letters of Enchantment duology by Rebecca Ross, due to all the historical aspects of the story.

Looking forward to reading this authors’ adult debut this year called Silvercloak. It has a fantastic premise!

Wow what a book this was such an amazing read. This is how you do atmospheric fantasy. From the first page I was hooked and powered through. I love the romanticism of the story-telling, the writing was so beautiful and poetic some of the best writing I’ve read in awhile. I loved Evelyn as a character and I saw so much of myself in her. I took a little bit of time to warm up to Arden but he did grow on me. I love the historical aspect of the story and going through the past in their previous recantations. Seeing their love from different embodiments no matter the biological sex/gender identity expression or the setting and environment. I loved how it was a modern retelling that brought in aspects of Dante’s Inferno. This was a real enemies to lovers that was done beautifully. This story really took my breathe away. My only critics would be once the big plot twist was revealed I felt it did drag on a bit, I wish we got to see a bit more of some side characters towards the end.  I wish the ending had a little bit more uniqueness to it besides the love conquers all but you know it still got me a little emotional “classic” for a reason. But I cannot wait to read more from Laura Stevens I’m so excited for her adult debut I have a feeling she’s gonna become an auto buy author me. This is a book I will always think about, I highly recommend to atmospheric fantasy with historical/classic elements.

This had my favorite tropes and themes of reincarnation and star crossed lovers. I loved the vivid settings. As well as Arden's love of love and Nature along with Evelyn's love of fashion and their gender fluidity.

The plot twists along with the original lives,
aka Calliope & Daphne. This was one of the best faustian retelling mixed with Dante's inferno. The way they wanted to keep each other safe in a twisted way to keep them away from the pain.
I will definitely need to reread them when I feel lighter to connect to the emotions.
