I am ANGRY because the author seems to have dropped off the face of the earth after promising a 3rd book at the end of this one.

I will be waiting, Corey :'(

Anyway, I made a review template, so here we go:

P L O T
One sentence summary: Zombie is enjoying his after-life and attempts to get the apocalypse rolling with his newfound leadership skills
Pacing: Good pacing, the only time it feels a LITTLE slow is when the main character starts overthinking things and rambling in his head. But they're still short (half a page or so) and are explained as temporary black-outs, so there's good reasoning behind it
Easy to follow?: Very easy! The only thing I got hung up on was which zombie was which sometimes. Who's Spider-Fingers again? I forget. But it doesn't really matter cause they're zombies
Multiple plot lines?: This is a quick book, read within an hour or so. Just one plot line - do zombie stuff
Predictability: VERY unpredictable in a great way. Even for "mindless" zombies I have no idea what's going to happen next. And there are lots of surprises!
Believability: I mean..... zombies. But there are some cool theories that are thrown around - they keep their ability to think, but are limited by their mobility, kind of like a neurological thing going on. Not many human notice though... I'm definitely going to be thinking of these books when I watch zombie movies in the future. Seeing it from the zombie's eyes.
How it left me feeling: The main character is pretty beat up by the end, I'm not sure how long he'd last in a 3rd book. But a 3rd book was promised!! Even if it was promised 5 years ago... I am so ready for it.
Any glaring triggers: Children zombies, trapped in a car (bus)
Stand-alone: I think you could probably read this without the first book, but there are some references to the first one, so it would definitely help

T O N E & W R I T I N G
Perspective: First person perspective - it does not change between characters
Tone: Excellent tone, it all read as thoughts that I think someone would really be thinking.
Variety of vocab: I gave the first book 4 stars for a bit excessive swearing. This book still has a lot of swearing, but I knew what I was getting into, and I feel like the swearing is nicely leveled out in this one. The main character isn't the brightest (obviously. Zombie.) but he still has a pretty good range of vocabulary. It has a nice flow without getting stuck on "zombie brainfart, what was that word?" or too big of words. There's LOTS of sensory descriptions in this book, but not overwhelmingly disgusting.

C H A R A C T E R S
Initial development: The main character is a fairly quick thinker and much more motivated in zombie-life than real life.
Progressive development: The author remembers each of the wounds that our zombie friend gets, and how they affect him. We also do see him progress as he spends more time being a zombie, and how that affects his mentality.
Am I invested in them?: Yes! I really love that each of his zombie friends have unique little things that still make them who they are. Jim mumbles. Curt charges people. Hilda shrieks. Honestly I thought Hilda would be annoying at first, but I ended up loving her.
Romance: No romance at all in this book
Motives: The motives are pretty clear-cut. Main Character is having fun with his afterlife - there seems to be a switch in people's minds that turns off the horror of it all when they become a zombie. They get an overwhelming urge to eat meat. Often. And the MC is pretty petty when it comes to wrongs done to him, but not in an irritating way. He wants to build a zombie army. But not that guy, that guy was a jerk. He'd probably be a jerk zombie. He can be food.

S E T T I N G
World: Modern day earth, early-stages of zombie outbreak
Scope: They travel from a mall to a Waffle House to a school. This isn't a grand-scale apocalypse yet. Baby steps.

• "Inside, the building was vacant and cold, much like the rest of my crew."
• "Curt jumped up and grabbed the end of the barrel with both hands, throwing his weight down immediately and pulling it toward the floor. A shot was wasted into the carpet, scaring some of the fuck out of me I had been saving for a special occasion."
• "“Goddamn,” the second man said through his mask, which is always what you want to hear when someone looks at you for the first time."
