A husband suavely, and with calm indifference, handles his wife’s blatant infidelities …. Until he doesn’t.
Patricia Highsmith specialises in writing charismatic sociopaths (a la Tom Ripley). She does this again in Deep Water, set in a close knit small American town.
With close attention to the interior thoughts of the protagonist as well as his impact on others, I was interested to see just when - and if - his breaking point would come.

too intense for me. i honestly hate spending time with sociopaths. i hate when people just dont talm to eachother lol. i much prefer roger akroyd.
More a psychological profile than a mystery or even a crime novel. Top notch writing and character insights had me loving this book, even as I despised the characters. Can't wait to read more Highsmith!

Our Mystery book club selection for December 2022.
I quite liked it. I liked the style, the slow breakdown of the protagonist.
Writing is excellent. Anybody that can use a word like "hoydenish" well has my vote.
I listened to the audio version, pretty much straight through.
3.5 stars, easy.
