Only read the first two chapters. I didn't dislike it--the writing is beautiful-- but there was nothing to hook me to the story.

It was pretty slow going and some pf it was more interesting than other parts. I think I usually read "nature books" to hear about the beauty of nature and become happy, but this book had a somber undertone because it was also about the author grieving after her father's unexpected death. I think she seems like a good writer and there was a lot of fascinating information on hawks and her hawk and the bond she developed with her. I'm interested to see what Vesper Heights is like.
Well I think it gets points for being unique, even though it doesn't execute that well. I learned some about falconry, some about T.H. White but very little about grief. I'm not even sure why her grief lead her to throw herself into falconry, and this "grief memoir" talks so little about grief that I don't think she really wants to let us in. I do wonder if I would like it if I were British -- Having a stronger relationship with the English countryside or falconry or White might make it resonate more. So read this book if you're interested in prose about British nature, but don't expect to get a window into the author's heart.
I can honestly say I’ve never read a book like this one. It made my brain work hard.

This was possibly one of the most beautifully written books I've read, but it wasn't always interesting. In fact, the content was perhaps only interesting because of the writing.
