I absolutely LOVED this book! I loved Agnieszka, the main character. She was spunky and sassy, even through her fear, and I love that in a female character. I loved the Dragon and all his crankiness. I loved Kasia for her loyalty. I just loved this book!

I don’t know how many more brooding black-haired boys and their much younger, secretly more powerful gf’s i can stan..... but right now the limit does not exist

I personally find her style of writing somewhat awkward, but her characters and her character development are badass. And the magic in the story is pretty awesome.

This story, set in a fantasy medieval Poland, starts out as a "talentless country girl (think Katniss) becomes super special" story. But then it grows pretty quickly to the entire realm struggles against an existential threat.
The first 25% goes predictably, but too quickly, to "special girl becomes special" and then grows pretty organically from there. It's a minor quibble, because the rest of the book is very good.
This book would be an excellent read for young readers except for a couple of short graphic sex scenes which really don't add anything to the story. The romance is just as effective without it, imho.
I appreciated the world-building, especially when the main character goes to the King's court in the capitol and meets other wizards.
There's also a pretty weird plot hole that is bothering me, but I'll let it slide.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys fantasy worlds with a likable female lead.

Ehh... I didn't hate it, but I sort of zoned out for the last 25% of the book and that should be the most exciting part.
This book, filled with sorcery and potions and spells, was an introduction to a whole new genre for me. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. Once I settled into the escapism of reading about something so fantastic, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I'm not sure how to rate the book. It has a strong female lead, plot twists that I did not expect, and beautiful imagery. The story didn't completely grip me (I was able to put it down to go to sleep), but I did enjoy the experience of reading it. Somehow it seems to be between a 3 and a 4 for me, but rating it a 3 felt right. That said, I'm about to go to the library website to see if another Naomi Novik book might be available for me to start tonight.

Loved it. Dark fairy tale. Magic, evil, good twisted to bad. I didn't want it to end.
