Rating just the audio - my full rating of the book is on the paperback edition.

I was looking forward to listening to this one, thinking it would give it some spark, as some audiobooks do, but I found the narration a little stilted and not overly engaging.

At first I thought it was just getting used to the accent, but I think it's more than that.

This is also the first audiobook where the narrator didn't even attempt to do "voices" for the characters, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.  I do think that bad voices can detract from a story, but good voices can help you get a little more lost in the story.

I still enjoyed it, overall, but it felt very long in audio form...

I know even when reading it had some pacing issues, but in audio, even bumping it up to 1.2x speed, it felt very long.

DID NOT FINISH: 6%

This sucked, and I only got 6% through. I was so scared that it was going to turn into smut/ a crazy strong romance book, which I never enjoy. I am pretty sure I can tell you the entire plot that will happen after only the 6% that I have read.

**I just searched up the plot, and I was right...***

The Dragon is an asshole for no reason, and the main character doesn't have a backbone. Everything was so painfully obvious. And for the 30000th time, I don't care that there is a stain on her dress!!!

I couldnt get through it. Wow, was that painful. DNF!!

From the beginning, I couldn't put this book down! Novik wove such a captivating story and I loved all of it. I felt as if I was a fly on the wall, watching Agnieszka's tale unfold. I only wish I could read it again as if for the first time.

This was a fun fantasy read. The first half is loosely grounded in the structure of Beauty and the Beast, and I would say it's the stronger half. There's more mystery, our plucky heroine is endearing, and her master is dark and mysterious. Once the plot opens up into something wider and newer, it becomes a little cheapened. Sort of a typical story about an upstart witch who does things differently and surprises everyone (except the reader) with her power.

Mild spoilers. 4.5 stars. If you want Robin McKinley with a lot more action and a little more sex, this is the book for you. The MC starts out tropey, but soon becomes confident and likable. I enjoyed her relationships with Kasia and the Dragon. Regarding the obvious enemies-to-lovers plot: if you're into it, you're going to be disappointed there's not more. If you hate it, you're going to be pissed it's there at all.

Honestly this book was really cute. I'll admit it went a little overboard with the magical learning aspect but it's meant to be rather fairytale like so I'll give it a pass on that.
