A total page turner! I was hooked from the start and the story never stopped.
Magic set in a world where witches and wizards work for the King, and their services are provided to the towns and cities.
A unique girl finding her way under the tutelage of a curmudgeon and that classic odd couple pairing.
Mystery and old stories and scary monsters from the woods.
All good stuff!

Definitely a favorite. Haunting and beautiful and a page turner. If you enjoy Katherine Arden (Bear and the Nightingale Trilolgy), you’ll love this.

This lovely and impeccable novel was the perfect read for a sick day. (Spoiler: I was sick when I wrote this brief review.) It's going to rank up there with The Goblin Emperor as one of my favorite fantasies. There is a quiet village, bordered by a dark and dangerous Wood; a haughty, powerful wizard, the Dragon, ruling from his tower; and a plain village girl, Agnieszka, discovering that within herself lies extraordinary magic and the will to use it to protect her home. This is a must-read for fantasy fans.

The first book I read by Naomi Novik. This was awesome. In this book Novik demonstrates a mastery of unreliable narration. If this revolves around the fact that the main character, Agnieszka, is... maybe not the sharpest tool in the shed, she's also incredibly passionate and emotional, which is what makes this book so hard to put down. I can't recommend this book enough.
