What a traumatic story with the strangest romance & a villain who is not at all a villain, but a victim.

I probably wouldn’t read this again, but it was good enough!

This was a good read, a bit slow to start with but the further you get into the book the more involved you get with the story. I liked the tension around the battles and the wood itself, the writing is lyrical and sometimes sparse but this works with what the book is all about i felt. I look forward to reading more by this author.

A selection by my book club. Another member had read it and said that it was fun and fast and really kept your attention. I agree with all of that, it met all the marks and I recommend it if you like a medieval fantasy with magic. Did you love Twilight? If yes read this book. If not, you may want to skip it.

I read Uprooted on Kindle, and this made it easier to skim pages of teenage angst. I had to do the same thing when I read Twilight years ago. The 17-year-old protagonist is unkempt and clumsy, except for the times that she's so beautiful she's dazzling. The story of friendship between Agnieszka and Kasia was my favorite thread through the book. Agnieszka develops lust/love for the sexy moody older wizard. He scowls and glowers his way through the book. At one point Agnieszka says something like, his irritation is endearing - hmm? I was happy that they parted ways near the end of the book and a little sad when he showed up again. But it's Agnieszka's story, not mine, and I did enjoy spending several hours with her.

Contrary to some of the content warnings, there is no pedophilia in this book. It's an adult minor situation. She is 17 and he's hundreds of years old but with the looks of a man closer to her age.

I like to think this was modeled around medieval times and back then it was more acceptable, definitely not okay now. It's a dark fantasy with swords, poor villages, kings and queens, wizards and witches, complete with a young maiden in a tower.

A dragon comes to a small village to take a young maiden every 10 years. The dragon is really a wizard who teaches the young women witchcraft. I thought it was underwhelming. Again, maybe it suffered from my listening to it?

Not my usual kind of book, but I'm glad a road trip necessitated it. This was a fun, interesting read read, and if not complex, was very entertaining.

What a treat to read. I found myself ensnared from the start, and that only held through the 700-odd pages.

Excellent addition to the fairy tale genre. Satisfying read. Curious choice, to hire an audio book narrator with a heavy Polish accent, but it does help place the story, and it IS in first person. It just makes the narration distracting or hard to understand in places.

*update: after spending the night thinking on it, I amended the rating to 4 stars because the second half of the book wasn’t as good as the first, and many parts felt rushed.

A thoroughly engaging read. I was surprised by how much I loved it since I don’t normally love fantasy, but I took every chance to keep picking it back up. I felt invested in the characters from from very first page, and the ending was both touching and surprising to me. Loved it.
