Deeply depressed and depressing. Everything felt inevitable, though for a brief shining moment here and there I thought that
Cassie would destroy the company before she died
.  That was the main will she/won't she of the book for me, otherwise I could see it all in front of me, but not in a bad way. It did take me a weirdly long time to realize that
Cassie had reproduced her relationship with her parents in her friends
.
I would not have called this magical realism. There's no indication that the black hole is literally, physically there.

I will admit that Cassie had grown on me by the end, but the last 20 pages can't make up for the majority of the book. I struggled with the literal manifestation of a black hole to represent her depression and her very copy and paste back story. I did enjoy the weird off-base parts of the narrative, and I really liked the structure and how Etter used dictionary definitions to give the reader examples of Cassie's past life. This was clever and well thought out, and I appreciated it. I could have done without the cocaine habit. It didn't feel necessary to the story. It was just another device to show how reckless and depressed our narrator was.

if a novel has a carmen maria machado blurb, you know it’s about to be poignant and devastating. ripe tears apart the american dream shred by shred. capitalism doesn’t work even for the best and brightest of workers. and all there really is left is small moments of joy in the absolute devastating absurdity of modern life.
