This book didn’t have the same kind of cohesive main plot thread in the way previous books did, but almost felt like a collection of anecdotes and stories from their life in the colonies. While the structure was a little different, I found it still very enjoyable. My favorite moments in these books are the little hilarious moments and the silly, non life threatening problems they navigate, and the insightful and philosophical conversations they have, especially Claire & Jamie. I think it felt like a relief after the very tumultuous drama of books 3 & 4. I want to say this book is more “peaceful” but at the same time what I would call one of the top 5 most horrible things that’s happened to a character in this series happened in this book, so do with that what you will lol. Somehow Claire and Jamie’s relationship continues to be the most interesting relationship in every book and I never get tired of their poignant yet hilarious conversations.
Iconic moments include Jamie scheming to get the babies baptized when the priest gets arrested and Jamie asking Claire to give his sperm “a decent burial” after showing them to him under her microscope lmao

Buckle in for DETAILS

I have a sneaking suspicion that the author ran into writer’s block several times and to remedy it she just figured she’d write this out day by day. It’s not until 8 hours and 45min (audiobook) into the book you finally see the wedding, to give you an idea. Personally I didn’t mind the day by day as much as some people but once things would get interesting I would be like “why isn’t more of the book like this?”. The end really picks up. Still a good book though and necessary to finish the series of course.
