This was pretty good, I really enjoyed reading about Madison as a working, single mom and her desire to be independent but still present for her son. I thought her whole situation was really well written, and I thought there were some really insightful moments made throughout the book. However, there were a few (minor) moments with character behavior that irked me a little and then there were some rather big things that happened - that pertain to the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book - that seemed like they weren’t really addressed to the extent I think they should have. It clearly effected Madison’s perception of men, but the individual event that happened on page didn’t seem to merit some additional healing? Idk I thought a little more time should have been spent on it. But otherwise, I enjoyed the story, the chemistry between Madison and Garrett was great, I loved her son Jamie, and the writing in general!

3.5 strong FMC stars

These stars are all for Madison. And Jamie. But man, Madison has my heart. Lilian T. James set out a goal- to write about someone she could have related to, someone who wasn't portrayed often in romance novels. She wanted to show how hard parenting is, especially when you're a young mom. She wanted to show the prejudices society will have against teen mothers, the struggles to balance life and parenting, the financial strains. And she did that beautifully.

Madison is a well-written, amazingly strong, absolutely killer character. She works non-stop to provide for her son, sacrificing precious time with him but wanting to provide him with everything she can. She is a badass who has endured 2 assholes in her short 25 years, has an awesome family and best friend to support her, but who has kind of closed herself of from romance due to her history. And honestly her stressing schedule.

Enter Garrett. I will give credit to him as far as Jamie goes. He handles his relationship with Jamie very well. BUT- I am not sure Garrett is what Madison would need in a partner. He's very alpha, exhibits similar traits to her abusive ex, he just never takes them over the line. You do feel good that Madison finally lets someone into her heart, I just wish it was someone better than Garrett.

That's the main flaw of this book for me. Their slow-burn was written well, but I would have wanted someone with less aggression and less stalker-y qualities. Not to mention, I don't get why we needed that 18.5 chapter at the end. Left me very puzzled.

I'd recommend this book for Madison. She deserves to have her story read.

Q: Could you ever interact with a rude neighbour?
-
Madison gave her heart to a boy at the age of sixteen, but all she got in return was a broken heart and a swollen belly. Alone with a baby and desperate for the love she hadn’t found, she turned to a man who sealed his claim of devotion with a diamond ring. He promised her a family. A life. A future. But his lies had only been a cover for the personal hell he introduced her to daily. Now, at twenty-five, Madison has long since stopped believing in love. Balancing single parenthood, three jobs, and online courses, she doesn’t have the time anyway. So when the broody neighbor living in the other side of her duplex leaves a rude note on her door, she’s not interested. Not in his dark hair, not in his physique, and definitely not in the dimples she’s only seen a hint of. She’s one hundred percent, absolutely, not interested. Not even a little.

I loved this book so much!! I read it in one sitting because I literally couldn’t put it down. The characters were so engaging, I loved the pacing of it and I loved the way it was written. It flowed so easily and just made my life feel better. And I loved Garett!! He is one of my favourite book boyfriends (I have many) but the way he gradually became less grumpy throughout and accepted Maddison and Jamie. Their relationship was so cute and adorable. It was also kinda sad which I also loved! I rated it 5 stars and cannot wait for the next one in the series!!

Have I finally matured beyond my love for toxic alpha male heroes and heroines that can't fend for themselves or was this book just bad
