Very few books by psychiatrists or medical professionals humanize their patients and discuss their own choices in the past with as much humility and honesty as Dr. Perry did in this book. Child psychiatry is a daunting field for many medical professionals, and patients are often seen as somewhat hopeless and sad cases; Dr. Perry does not dispute this stereotyping in this book but rather uses his remarkable wealth of empathy to demonstrate the complexity of these patients' lives and stories while also attempting to use their stories as calls for action and hope. He avoids exploiting their stories for dramatic purpose or shock value and rather produces a book calling for empathy, love, and attention to societies' most vulnerable people.

I cannot express how much I love this book. I learned so much about the brain and how we respond to trauma, and I was wholly inspired by the book. It was a bit of a dense read (it is, after all, often used as a textbook), but I still couldn't put it down.
